May 18, 2019 Charles A. VanLear, III, 73, of Roanoke, Va. passed away Saturday, May 18, 2019. Charlie was born in Martinsville, Va. where he lived until attending Elon University. He enjoyed playing basketball at Martinsville High School and then at Elon University. After graduation he moved to Roanoke where he continued his love of basketball as a coach at William Fleming High School. As a teacher and administrator he helped guide many young people in reaching their full potential, retiring from Lord Botetourt High School in 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. and Eva Johnson VanLear. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sallie Ann Ward VanLear; brothers-in-law, Kenneth A. (Shug) Ward and Robert E. (Carolyn) Ward, Jr. In lieu of flowers, Sallie Ann suggests that memorials be made to Bonsack Baptist Church 4845 Cloverdale Road Roanoke, Va. 24019. A celebration of Charlie's life will be scheduled for a later date. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory. (540) 366-0707.
