BREAKING NEWS: Dick Hensley dies at 85
Long-time MHS coach, Carlisle headmaster emeritus

David R. “Dick” Hensley Jr., 85, of Martinsville, long-time Martinsville High School football coach and Carlisle School headmaster emeritus, died today at Blue Ridge Manor.

David R. “Dick” Hensley Jr., 85, of Martinsville, long-time Martinsville High School football coach and Carlisle School headmaster emeritus, died today at Blue Ridge Manor.

Among his survivors are his wife, Helen Hensley, of the home.
Hensley was head coach at Martinsville High School for 13 years, and also coached at Winchester (Ky.) High School, Fork Union Military Academy, Hargrave Military Academy and Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke. In all, his teams won five state titles and numerous district titles.
He was named headmaster of Carlisle in 1984 and retired in January 1992, becoming headmaster emeritus.
Hensley played football at and graduated from Martinsville High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond and a master’s degree from the University of Virginia. He also attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, according to information presented when he received the Chamber of Commerce’s Heck Ford Award.
He also spent time in the Merchant Marine and the ministry.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville.
