This is an old high school (sort of) memory. I went to Phillips Exeter Academy for summer school between junior & senior years at Mavahi. Everybody kind of looked down on my small Southern hometown. But one day when a girl from San Diego said her high school was named "Patrick Henry" (instead of "JFK" like the students wanted), I said, "Everything where I live is named 'Patrick Henry.'" She asked why, and I said "Oh, he used to live around there." They didn't say anything after that. I found out a few years ago that the whole Chatmoss area once was part of Patrick Henry's land, so the house Smith and I have lived in for nearly 25 years is on land that once belonged to Patrick Henry.
If you haven't read the book "The Hairstons: an American Family in Black and White," you ought to. Some of the stuff the author was so astonished about, we grew up knowing. |
