Attended Memorial for Harold Hawks - 9
06/22/19     Phil Sparks  (1965)      PhilSparks@kimbanet.com
Recently I had posted a search request for Harold Dennis Hawks. Fortunately Speedy Campbell happened to find him. Speedy and I drove up to Hillsville area and visited him. Same ole Harold but sadly in seriously declining health. Harold Passed away on June 1st, peacefully, in his sleep. Saturday June 15th a memorial remembrance service was convened at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Many people attended; Speedy Campbell, Dr. David Sparks and wife Christine, Kate Hudson Class of 62 and Mack Evans was there along with myself from Martinsville.
Many people were impressed with the well aged display of Harold's many awards and decorations from his U.S. Army service. Of note was that Harold was the recipient of the United States Army Distinguished Flying Cross Medal along with multiple awards of the Air Medal and several United States Army Commendation Medals one of which included a "V" Device denoting "Valorous Achievement"..
Harold also did some unusual work during his life. He worked as a contractor for Bell Helicopter and was assigned to crew and maintain a custom UHIH (Huey) Helicopter built especially for the then Shah of Iran. Unfortunately the return of the Ayatollah Khomeini to Iran forced Harold and the other contractors to flee that country and seek refuge in Jordon. In true Mavahi fashion, Harold and the Bell crew made their escape in you guessed it .... the Shah's stolen custom "Huey".
Harold was a great friend and always a gentleman in every regard.
He has flown that final mission and this one is directly into Heaven's own landing zone.
"Rest in peace Harold"
***** As several other people have been learning of Harold's death all have had many remarkable things to say about Harold. He had a lot of people who thought a lot of him.
