Class of '56 Reunion Sat. Night - 3
05/08/22     Esther Sparks Powell  (1956)      bhpowell36@yahoo.com
Well, after being postponed last October due to covid, Class of '56 was finally able to get together at Dutch Inn this weekend to celebrate the 65th anniversary of our graduation from dear old Mavahi. It was worth the wait and such a wonderful evening.

Our guest speaker was Desmond Kendrick, archivist for Henry County and Pennsylvania County. He gave a most interesting and informative talk on some of our local history. He also had set up a display table of fascinating photos of early Henry County and surrounding area, some of which were very old.

Ann Minter Been and husband, Paul and son, Jeff, were here from Grand Junction, CO. Ann is chairwoman for the reunion committee and did another fantastic job organizing and getting everything together all the way from her home in Colorado. She is one amazing lady, and I am so proud she was my classmate and allows me to call her friend.

Phil Sparks kindly loaned the use of a speaker system for the occasion. I believe Jeff and Paul were the ones to set it up. I was volunteered to get it back to Phil. Paul was kind enough to put it into my car for me, and thank you, again, Paul.

Joe Pritchard and friend, Margaret Ballard, came all the way from Navarre, FL. Joe, did a great job as M.C. and shared an amusing memory of a youthful brush with the law...along with some other fun stuff so typical of the way we recall him from those days way back when. Enjoyed it, Joe.

Benny Eanes and wife, Carolyn were here from Hickory, NC. Naturally, no reunion would ever be complete without a few (or several) words from our Benny. In other words, Benny spoke, too. Good job, Benny!

Lois Stanley Flippen had written some sweet words, which her lovely daughter, Denise Ashley read for her. Although I did not attend Friday's gathering at the Inn, I understand that Lois and Denise prepared and brought some delicious snacks for all those who showed up to enjoy.

I understand that Stella Shupe Meadors and daughter, Robin attended the Friday night gathering, but decided to opt out on the big one Saturday evening. Good to hear that Stella is still able to get out and join in at least part of the fun. Sorry to have missed her, though.

Jim Brigman and his wife (the other Esther) were here from Villa Rica, GA. It's always so nice to see them. Jim read the list of all the classmates who have passed away. Sadly, I think the list has grown to almost 60 out of our original 144.

Freddy Compton still lives in Martinsville and looking well. I enjoyed chatting with him.

Carl Eanes and wife, Ellen from Lynchburg, VA made it here. They were looking great and seemed to be in good health.

Virginia "Pudding" Flannagan is still here in the Martinsville area. She has barely changed at all and so easily recognized. Good going, Pudding.

James Franklin also has remained in the Martinsville area. James and I go a long
ways back. We were both raised on Jones Creek and later worked together at Dupont. My sister, Anna and I had the pleasure of James' company at dinner, along
with Benny and Carolyn Eanes, and Ron Pritchard and Margaret, and Shirley Key.

Sandra Fulcher Puckett came from Oak Island, NC. Sandra is looking good, too.

Jane Goeghegan Hastings, husband George, and sister, Linda were here. Jane and George are from Richmond, but I'm not sure about sister, Linda. I do know that the two sisters look so much alike that I kept getting them confused unless they were
side by side.

Shirley Key, who still is here in Martinsville, also sat at our table. Shirley is one of the sweetest people ever, and appropriately, she was the one asked to say the prayer before the meal.

Beryl Martin Clifton came from Danville. Beryl had hardly changed and was as cute and friendly as in Mavahi days.

Eloise Mayhew Prilliman and son, Mike were here from Forest, VA. I really enjoyed seeing Eloise. It had been such a long time. That son is certainly a good-looking young man.

Reginald Mayhew, wife Jeanie, and daughter Mary Robin are still here in Collinsville. Mary Robin was so friendly, taking pictures and chatting with all of us. Such a cute girl, too. I really enjoyed her.

Frances McMillian Howell now lives in Greensboro, NC. Frances and I were in the 7th grade together and we got a chuckle or two out of reminiscing about a few things, but for some reason, I have misplaced the info about her husband. If anyone wants to send it to me, I'll be glad to add it.

Moyer Merriman and wife, Peggy live in Bassett. I had a very enjoyable chat with them.

Robert Pedigo and Loretta made it over from Vinton, Va. Robert is still about the same size as he was in school and looking very fit. Loretta is a friendly and lovely person. It's always nice to see them, again.

Betty Priddy Bomer and Jimmy live in the Martinsville area. Betty was beautiful as always, and Jimmy his usual sweet gentlemanly self. Such a nice couple.

Glen Rhodes and Jeanne now live in Mooresville, NC. I was so pleased to see Jeanne. Because of some health issues, Glen had come to the last couple of "Old Dawgs" reunion without her. I'm glad to say they are both looking good now.

Nancy Rizer Williams and husband, Ed were such a welcomed sight for me to see. They only live across the line in nearby Stoneville, but the only time I have seen Nancy in 65 years was at this and maybe one other reunion.

Barbara Short Castella and husband Nino were a welcomed sight. It's always fun to talk to Barbara. They live in Glenn Allen, VA and both look happy and healthy.

Carol Shropshire Pratt is still in Martinsville. She has done an excellent job as our reunion treasurer. Thank you, Carol. I really enjoyed seeing you Saturday.

Harry Stultz and wife Amy came all the way up from Miami, Florida. A nice couple and such a pleasure to talk to. Wasn't Amy one of the ladies who was doing the name tags as we came in???

A vote was taken and won to have another reunion in four years rather than five. We'll be at least 87 or 88...so good luck to all. Not sure who agreed to become chairperson for the next one. Wasn't Ann since she lives so far away, and it sure
was NOT me.

Well, this is my story and I'm going to stick to it unless someone knows something that they want me to correct, or add. My e-mail address is always at the top of my postings.

Re: Class of '56 Reunion Sat. Night
Esther, What a great and accurate report regarding our 65th plus 1 Reunion! Thank you for attending and being our Reporter again. Yes, we WILL have another in 4 years. As the late John Martin once said, "As long as Ann Minter Been is living, there will continue to be Reunions!" I agree, but I may not be the Chairman again........How about, Co-Chairmen?
