'56 Classmate Iris Barnes Mullican Passes - 3
01/22/21     Esther Sparks Powell  (1956)      bhpowell36@yahoo.com
I am so saddened to report that our classmate Iris Barnes Mullican has passed. Iris was always a sweet and friendly girl in school...very likeable. I enjoyed having several classes with her. She was still that same sweet and friendly person each time she attended our reunions. I understand that her husband just passed away a few weeks ago. My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to her family for both losses.

Obit For Iris

Iris Barnes Mullican, of Suffolk, VA, passed away peacefully in her home, on Friday, January 15, 2021, at the age of 82. She has gone to her eternal home in heaven to join her husband of 62 years, Oscar Lee Mullican Jr.; her parents, George “Nick” Barnes and Leola Barnes; and her sister, Ethel Barnes Nelson, and husband Mike Nelson of Martinsville VA.

Iris left a legacy of love, selflessness, and humility to her surviving family: daughters: Catherine C. Mastrangeli, Anita M. Bryant, Margaret E. Poitras, and Lee Ann Hawley; sons-in-love: Mario W. Mastrangeli, Dane Bryant, Don Poitras, and Mark Hawley; grandchildren: Alicia, Nicholas, and Mario David Mastrangeli; Brittney, Tyler, and Brandon Bryant; Tanner, Elijah and Juliana Poitras; Trevor and wife, Megan, and Jackson Hawley; sister-in-law Deborah Mullican; nephew Chuck and wife Elisabeth (Buffy) Mullican; nieces Cheryl and husband Danny, Karen and husband Jim, and Elizabeth Duncan.

Iris was a caring and dedicated teacher who taught business classes at Princess Anne, Green Run, and Salem High Schools in Virginia Beach. She also spent many extra hours supporting Future Business Leaders of America. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Bluefield College, Bachelor’s Degree from Old Dominion University, and a Master’s Degree from George Washington University.

Even while she was a full-time teacher, Iris was always a full-time “Mom” to her daughters and sons-in-love; and an amazing “Nana” to her 11 grandchildren. She retired from 32 years of teaching in 2006, to spend quality time with her husband, daughters, family, and friends. Iris was an active member of Nansemond River Baptist Church, and served faithfully as a hostess in Christian Woman’s Club for many years. She loved the Lord, and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.

“Nana” was a very special mother, grandmother, and friend who always put others before self. Her loving nature was evident to all those fortunate to know her. She faithfully believed, and lived, in love. You need not look farther than 1 Corinthians 13 to sense the depth and breadth of how she lived: always patient and kind; without envy or pride. She was never rude, and always slow to anger. Her love was trustworthy, displayed hope, and continues to persevere…
