In the Year 2525 - 10
01/04/20     Greg Norton  (1963)      sgnorton@hotmail.com

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find

In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie
Everything you think, do and say
Is in the pill you took today

In the year 4545
You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you

In the year 5555
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doin' that for you

In the year 6565
You won't need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year 7510
If God's a-coming, He oughta make it by then
Maybe He'll look around Himself and say
Guess it's time for the judgment day

In the year 8510
God is gonna shake His mighty head
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been
Or tear it down, and start again

In the year 9595
I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing

Now it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew

Now man's reign is through
But through eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday

Re: In the Year 2525
Hi Greg,
I read this thought provoking poem with much interest. It shows why we should be concerned about the future of this world for sure. I first thought it was a satire projecting the harm man will do to the earth, but as I noticed the change occurring each thousand years and it scared me. It shows how the self-centered corruption in man is not getting better, but grows more depraved with each generation.

Man is bringing far greater harm to people than he is to the earth. I ask myself what is worse: pollution which is indeed a bad problem, or killing a newborn outside the womb? Man hating man is our greatest problem by far and causes the greatest destruction. There are probably more than 20 countries in the world that have survived hundreds of years by side “A” in power killing out a percent of side “b” when they are threatened. A clear example is Iraq. Before the war, Sunnis were in power and killed as necessary uppity Shiites. Now the Shiites are in power and look what is happening.

The land being destroyed is a problem, but our corrupt self-centered nature turned loose on each other is our greatest problem. God gave us a perfect compass to guide our way, but we leave the compass on the table because we don’t like following wisdom.

Well, so much for English Literature 101 (ha-Ha). I was hoping you would have made it back for our 50th reunion, but I know you are very far away. I remember with fondness how you and I each got into a fight with the same person in the ninth grade. I like to lie to myself and claim he was more corrupt than me. I am planning a trip this summer out your way to see “the road to the sun” in my van Motorhome. If I end up a little further west, I will phone you hoping we can have lunch. Blessings!

Re: In the Year 2525
It is truly a small world.
Back in 1983-84 I was doing graduate work for a project I was assigned to with the U.S. Army at Fort Sheridan, IL. I had been detailed to the University of Nebraska (Lincoln). I was there for 6 months and lived in the Nebraska Center on campus. Most of our classes were conducted at the Nebraska Public TV Station about 100 yards away. Most of my classmates were from major U.S. and Foreign industries. We had also had a Canadian Air Force Officer as well. A few of the people were from Lincoln so we were kept up to date on many of the local happenings. One Friday one of the locals told me there was a performing artist I shouldn't miss that night at one of the local venues. Looking for something to do I drove uptown to the place and the performer was a guy named Rich Evans. He was really good and I learned that he and a guy named Denny Zager were the original Artists for "The Year 2025" (one hit wonder) He was a heck of a nice guy and returned to Lincoln 5 or 6 more times during my time there. He wrote the song while a philosophy and theology student at Nebraska Wesleyan University (circa1962) but never did anything with it until around 1967. He and Zager recorded it and it went to number one on Billboard for several weeks. Rich died a couple of years ago and Denny is in the guitar manufacturing (custom handmade stuff)business. Lots of famous artists use Zager Guitars.
I actually got to know Rich pretty well (he sometimes went by Rick as well). He told me his inspiration for the song had actually originated as a basis for a new age "Hymn" but had been told it was too depressing and probably would not be received as an uplifting hymn of rejoicing. He and Denny continued to work on the song and one night they had a club full of stoners and longhairs and they performed it. That group connected and the rest is history...

Re: In the Year 2525
Leon - you hit the nail on the head in your analysis of our problems (at least in my opinion too). Humans started as tribes attacking other tribes and they still are doing it - nothing will ever change. Here is memo I wrote on this some time ago, see if any of this rings true:

WAR IS THE NAME OF THE GAME
I stumbled across a documentary on WWII on Netflix that I have been watching for several hours now. It is the most complete analysis of the actions that occurred in the build up to WWII I have ever seen.
What I have realized watching this is that war is the name of the game – it is what we humans do – continuously. Always have and always will. And for one basic reason, to gain power, control & wealth (PC&W). All the destruction, death & injury do not matter – not to the persons making the decisions. It is just part of the process of gaining PC&W. It is not about values or morals – just PC&W. Hitler is no different from Gengas Kahn or Alexander the Great or Attila the Hun or Bernie Madoff or Donald Trump; or the bankers who fund both sides of all wars. The owner of the team does not care that the star of team has lead the team to victory for the past ten seasons; if he cannot do it again this season, he is out the door. There are no friendships at the top level, just winners and losers; just PC&W or nothing.
For you and me, the fodder in all these contests, we can only hope to have a few years at the end of the line to enjoy a few of the good things in life if we are lucky; good health, beautiful surroundings, each other. Most do not even have these pleasures.
It is no wonder someone created the concept of a heaven with streets paved in gold and endless happiness where we meet up with all our lost friends and family and sing all day and want for nothing. And no wonder that so many bought this concept without question – for most it is the best thing they will ever have.
For those who end up on “top” and make the decisions to go to war, they never find happiness – the grass is always greener somewhere else. They are always struggling to gain more PC&W but can never get enough. Having the big houses and airplanes and boats and servants and money does not bring relief, only frustration from the need to have more – so, they start another war.

Re: In the Year 2525
Well said old friend! As weird as that song you posted might sound, man might make it come true should the world stand that long. As we remaining of the class of ‘63 have now lived a long life, hopefully we have gained at least some wisdom. However, with wisdom comes sadness, because we see the hopelessness of this world.
The saying: “Power corrupts and absolute power absolutely corrupts” I fear is true for all of us. All humans are born with a self-centered nature. This is easily proven by watching a newborn baby show anger because it did not get its way. The super wealthy and the politically powerful can and do make the world go in their favor. Unfortunately, that self -centered nature, I believe, is in all mankind. At one time in my life I had thousands of employees depending on me, and I thought I was both good and great. I even thought that when I died it would take two funeral homes to hold all of the people that would come. That was vanity. I think had I been left in power more years, I would have possibly done good things for people, but I would have hurt others to keep my power.

Even knowing the evil that runs the world, we need to remember that there also is much good in the world too. There is a fair percent of people who have made a choice not to seek wealth and power by being unfair to others. They made a choice to suffer the consequences of being truly honest even when it hurts. I think in that effort, we set rules for ourselves that we will not break.

For me and my corrupt nature, I read every word Jesus said in the New Testament, and I see: no corruption, no sin, no ego, but pure love for others. I know I cannot be that good, but I seek to follow His rules the best my human nature will let me, that I might someday go where He is. I don’t believe heaven is luxury, but I know it is a just place. If my faith is mistaken, and death is the end of us, then I still died in hope, rather than being lost. I desire that even for the worst enemy I ever had.

Re: In the Year 2525
First time I recall ever hearing the song was when I lived in NJ with my brother, Mel, the summer after my graduation. I always thought it was a cool song.
