Jimmy 'Cuz' Draper - 5
11/15/07     Irvin Painter  (1958)      rip622002@yahoo.com
Jimmy Draper, in my opinion, was the 'heart & soul' of our football team our Sr.year(Fall of '57)!
He was a 'load' at full back for us(was always glad he was on our team & I didn't have to try & tackle him). And he was one of the better Def.Ends during 'our time'. NO, let me rephrase that, he was one of the best Def. Ends during 'our or any other time'! But, as good a player as he was, he was a better friend & person. He will certainly be missed by all his friends & family; I know that I have have lost a part of my life & memories. Goodbye 'Moose'. Irvin

Re: Jimmy 'Cuz' Draper
Less than 2 months after we lost 'Cuz', we lost Tommy Swain from our Fall '57 team. Tommy was our center & middle linebacker. What I remember most about Tommy was that he transferred back to MHS from Hargrave in the Fall '56. After practicing for 3 weeks, it was determined that he was not eligible for that season. Tommy stayed with the team the entire season even though he couldn'tplay on Friday nights! That's a lot of practicing waiting for 'next year'. Not many could/would have done that. Tommy had a determination that exceeded most.
Within 2 months, we lost 2 good friends & team-mates. But there is a pretty good team being formed 'up-there'. Hold spots for the rest of us, but don't schedule any games too soon! I bet that 'up-there' we'll be able to play all our friends from Bassett too! Always thought that would have been some kind of a game! So long Tommy & 'Cuz'.
